Presentation
In the middle of the 1980’s, research in second language (L2) acquisition has been influenced by the different perspectives adopted on nominal determination in linguistics. In the generative framework, L2 acquisition research has paralleled the development of nominal determination with that of verbal inflection. In the functionalist framework, mapping form and function for the constituents of the noun phrase, together with operations of determination have been the main focus of the studies.
There hasn’t been much connection between research in L2 acquisition and the field of teacher education in L2. However, nominal determination, number and gender have never ceased to be under focus in language classes and many teachers who kept on hearing the same questions on the part of their students have tried to answer some in pedagogical grammars and other textbooks.
This one-day event aims to see the emergence of different perspectives on the grammar of noun phrases from different fields.
L2 acquisition researchers will present their results, based on data collected with students who solved complex verbal tasks in French L2, the tasks designed according to the different levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Catherine Carlo will analyze data with Spanish L1 speakers, Cyrille Granget, Japanese L1 speakers, Henriëtte Hendriks, Chinese L1 speakers, Ursula Paprocka, Polish L1 speakers, and Mireille Prodeau, English L1 speakers, all L1s with a different system and distance with French.
Two psycholinguists will analyze the acquisition process in French L1 & L2: Dominique Bassano will present the developmental sequence in nomional determination in French L1 and Cheryl Frenck-Mestre will focus more specifically on gender and phonological encoding, contrasting L1 with L2 acquisition in French.
Michel Charolles, specialist in textual linguistics, will bring in the point of view of a linguist whose work on reference and nominal determination has helped many in linguistics and beyond.
Cecile Bruley, who has been working for the Centre International d’Etudes Pédagogiques (International Center for Research in Pedagogy), will give a survey of how nominal determination, number and gender are presented in the main books offered to both students and teachers.
This one-day event will end with a round table where everybody can contribute to the debate on questions linked to learning and teaching the grammar of the noun phrase in French as a foreign language.
