This research team sprang from two research groups: the first, JE 1973 (a two year existence from 1995 to 1997), located at Paris III was directed by Professors L. Danon-Boileau and D. Véronique. It was then integrated into a bigger research team SYLED (EA 2240) which was approved by the services of the Minister of Research and Higher Education and became DELCA. After 4 years, 1997-2004, the Ministry’s new regulations impose restructuring the research at Paris III and ELCA is from 2004 part of the research team EA 2290 Didactique des langues, des textes et des cultures (Education Research and teacher training in languages, texts and cultures) whose head is Professor J-L. CHISS.

The main research themes are:

• Studying the acquisition of French as a foreign/second language in guided and unguided settings and more specifically since 1999, about the acquisition and the use of nominal determination, number and gender in French.


• Linking research on acquisition and teaching languages with its main focus on the links between the different levels defined by the European framework and the acquisition developmental sequence(s). Was published a joint book L'acquisition de la grammaire du français, langue étrangère (Acquisition of Grammar of French as a Second and Foreign language), Didier, coll. "Langues et didactique" (dir. D. Véronique), 2009, 416 p.

• One Day conference “Grammar in context, foreign language acquisition and teaching: the noun phrase ”, Paris, June 30th 2009.

Several events have been organized:

• 1995: One day workshop on negation.

• 1996: One day workshop on ‘acquisition and interaction’.
